Some supermarkets are limiting the number of items consumers can purchase due to the alarming shortages of some fruits and vegetables, most notably tomatoes, in the United Kingdom.
The British government blamed poor weather conditions in South Europe and North Africa, including Morocco and Spain, two of the UK's largest exporters of fruits and vegetables, for the shortages of these items on the shelves of the UK stores.
Euronews says over 25% of the tomatoes in the UK come from Morocco, and 20% come from Spain.
The UK shortage is most severe regarding tomatoes, whose prices have increased dramatically in Morocco. Among other fruits and vegetables, capped items include peppers, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers, and raspberries.

A statement from APEFEL says that "as a natural result, the daily harvest has reduced drastically, resulting in a reduction of the supply capacity of packing stations and provisioning of the local Moroccan market, as well as markets abroad."
Meanwhile, some have asserted that there may be a connection between the veggie issue and Brexit.
Morocco decided to limit its supplies to the British market to control tomato prices, which have risen as high as MAD 16 in some areas. To keep costs under control, North Africa has also prohibited the shipment of several crops to West Africa.
Many Moroccans are worried about the rising commodity prices, severely limiting their families' ability to purchase goods. For example, as Ramadan approaches, tomato prices rise when the demand for production increases.
